Many of us Italian ULM pilots live just a few miles from international borders — France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia…
Some of us are crossing into your skies. Legally. Others? Let’s say… not always 100% aligned with local rules.
Here’s what we’re wondering:

How are Italian ULM pilots perceived abroad?
As responsible aviators? As rule-benders? As welcome guests?
Are we seen as bringing a different flying culture, or as pilots ignoring the local framework?
What’s your experience with Italians landing at your airfields or entering your CTRs?
Why the confusion from our side?
In Italy, we have a special national category:
→ “VDS basico”: No license, no transponder, no ELT.
→ “VDS avanzato”: Allowed in CTR, but still not EASA-certified.
Some pilots aren’t even aware they need prior permission, flight plan, or compliance with foreign equipment rules. Others try to do it properly but face language barriers or unclear procedures.
We want to learn — and improve.

What are your thoughts when you see an Italian ULM on your apron?
What documents do you usually ask for?
What would you expect from us when flying into your country?

We’re looking for constructive feedback, experiences, or even stories (good or bad) about Italian pilots visiting from the south side of the Alps.
